Questions and answers regarding Travel insurances and the Coronavirus

I AM SUPPOSED TO TRAVEL TO AN AREA WHERE THE CORONAVIRUS IS PRESENT

I have planned a trip to an area where the Coronavirus is present. Can I file a Cancellation insurance claim?

No, Cancellation insurance is meant to protect you in the event that something happens to you, the insured. You can file a claim if, for example, you become sick or if a family member dies and you can no longer travel.

In most cases, changed circumstances at your destination are not a valid reason to file a claim on your Cancellation insurance policy. There is an exception: In the event that damages have occurred at your destination address, due to fire or storm for example, and you are not reimbursed by the property’s landlord, you can file a claim.

In the event that a travel agency cancels your flight, you will often be given the opportunity to reschedule your trip or receive reimbursement for cancellation costs. You may only claim these expenses through your Cancellation insurance policy in the event that your travel agency does not reimburse you.

I plan to travel to an area where the travel advisory is now orange or red. Does my Travel insurance provide coverage for this?

Yes, your Travel insurance provides coverage in this case, with the usual applicable policy conditions. If ENNIA has excluded any countries or areas from the policy, you will not have any coverage in those areas.

If travel to a certain country or area is prohibited due to the Coronavirus, but I have booked tickets to that area, can I file a Cancellation insurance claim?

I HAVE THE CORONAVIRUS

I have the Coronavirus. Can other people hold me liable for damages if they become infected by me?

Probably not. In order to hold someone liable for this, you must be able to demonstrate that someone willfully committed a wrongful act, and that this caused damages as a result. This would be very difficult to demonstrate.

My employer made me travel to an area affected by the Coronavirus. I did that, but I contracted the Coronavirus because of that. Can I hold my employer liable?

That may be possible, you might be able to prove intent. After all, the employer knows that there is a (significant) chance that you could get sick, and employers are obligated to provide safe and healthy working conditions.

Suppose someone dies from the Coronavirus. What happens to life insurance, funeral insurance and survivor's pension in a case like that?

The fact that someone has died from the Coronavirus does not mean that these policies will not pay out. Any exclusions listed in the policy regarding stays in areas with negative travel advisories are not intended for a situation like this one. The policies would be paid out.

IMPACT ON INSURANCE COMPANIES

Epidemics are excluded from many non-life insurance policies. Why is that?

Insurance companies do this because the potential cumulative damage of an epidemic can be enormous. This could jeopardize the insurer's financial standing (solvency). That is why some insurers exclude this risk.
